SEO Resources for Startups

← Back to Founder Resources

So the bad news is that SEO is one of those things that's often changing - Google's mysterious ever-changing algorithm that just never seems to let you win. The good news is that there are still ways to use SEO to build your company, as long as you don't try to cut corners.

Airtable

Great company obviously. What I love about their approach is that there’s nothing truly mind-blowing about what they did, but rather the insight lies much in the timing of their tactics. It’s really interesting how they recognised that templates are highly valued in the B2B world, so they used all kinds of templates in their marketing strategy. I think this could be an interesting play for anyone who's customers have repetitive business practices.

Slack

Even big things have small beginnings. A small developer with a shuttered video game refined and released its internal chat system, at one point begging companies and friends to give it a try. Slack launched through a beta version back in 2013, and shocked us all when it grew to 50K users within a few weeks.

That’s massive growth folks, and Slack did it without relying on traditional marketing techniques. Keep in mind that Slack didn’t hire an outbound sales team until 2016, and they reached a $1.1B valuation before bringing a CMO onboard.

Flash forward 8 years, and Slack is now at 10M daily active users, 159K paid users, and a valuation of $27B!

Mack's Resources

Mack the Moose is a character I made up. He is here to help startup founders with great (and mostly free) resources & tools. I haven't trademarked it. The logo was downloaded from a free site (see design resources). I do this in my spare time, so feedback is greatly appreciated, but any complaints may be sent to Scott Morrison @ Parliament Dr, Canberra ACT 2600.
